Recently, political discourse in Bangladesh intensified following a Facebook post by Hasnat Abdullah, chief organizer of the National Citizen Party (NCP) for the southern region, claiming that a "Refined Awami League" plan had been presented from the cantonment.
Amid this, a video was circulated from an account named ‘Nabila Jamal,’ operated from India, alleging that the Bangladesh Army’s 9th Infantry Division was advancing toward Dhaka in response to concerns over a possible coup against the interim government associated with Muhammad Yunus.
The same video was also shared from an account named ‘Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury’ on X (formerly Twitter), asserting that following propaganda allegedly conducted by so-called student leaders affiliated with Muhammad Yunus against Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman and the Bangladesh Army, members of the Armed Forces were attacked last night. According to the post, Yunus, having already turned against the police, now seeks to dismantle the military. Additionally, the video has been circulated online with claims of anti-army slogans such as “fake fake” and physical altercations between students and the army.
Fact-Check
Upon investigation by the Rumor Scanner team, it was found that the circulated video is neither recent nor from this month. The video originates from an event that took place on February 5 in the Dhanmondi 32 area during a “Bulldozer Rally” program. That day, students and civilians entered house number 32 and carried out acts of vandalism. When the army arrived at the scene, the crowd began chanting “fake fake” slogans. The currently circulated video has been taken from that incident and repurposed with misleading claims.
A similar video from the same event, captioned “Students force army out with 'fake fake' slogans from House 32 | Dhanmondi 32 | PB”, was published on February 5 on the YouTube channel of the national daily Protidiner Bangladesh. A comparison of frames from the viral video and the February video reveals the presence of the same individual, indicating both videos are from the same event.
Further confirmation comes from a February 5 report on the website of the online news portal The Daily Campus, titled “Army at Dhanmondi-32, ‘fake fake’ slogans from agitated student crowd.” According to the report, intense tension arose in the Dhanmondi-32 area surrounding a virtual session involving ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. As part of the declared “Bulldozer Rally” program, students and civilians began gathering in the area after dusk. Around 8 PM, the crowd entered house 32 and engaged in vandalism. When army personnel arrived at 9 PM, the agitated students began chanting “fake, fake” slogans. Similar details were also reported on the website of Ekushey Television.
Therefore, the event involving vandalism by students and civilians in Dhanmondi-32 last February, followed by the army's arrival and the chanting of slogans, has been falsely portrayed as a recent military advancement of the 9th Infantry Division toward Dhaka. The claim is misleading.
