Investigations by the Rumor Scanner team revealed that no such attack took place at Dhaka University. Instead, the rumor originated from a satirical Facebook post by a Chhatra Dal leader. Using social media monitoring tools, the team identified a post made on January 2 at 11:02 AM from an account named "Shakil Ahammed." The post, which lacked any disclaimers, was shared sarcastically and even reposted by a former Chhatra League leader and a former State Minister for Information and Broadcasting.
Further examination confirmed that Shakil Ahammed is affiliated with Chhatra Dal. A report published by Prothom Alo titled “Propaganda against us over DUCSU elections: DU Chhatra Dal” on January 3 clarified that Chhatra Dal claimed they were being targeted by false propaganda.Ganesh Chandra Roy, President of Dhaka University Chhatra Dal, stated to Prothom Alo:“There was no incident of harassment involving Chhatra Dal leaders and the Vice-Chancellor. However, we issued show-cause notices to those Chhatra Dal leaders who were present at the scene to ensure organizational transparency.”
DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed commented:“Protests often involve raised voices. We are accustomed to that. This incident was not one of harassment or disrespect. Students were expressing their demands, and some of those demands were reasonable.”
Another report by Daily Campus on January 3, titled “Rumors of attack on DU VC and Proctor by Chhatra Dal and Shibir are baseless,” confirmed that the claims had no merit. Dr. Saifuddin Ahmed referred to the circulating posts as “nonsense” and “unrealistic,” adding that similar baseless allegations had been perpetuated for years.
Speaking to multiple journalists, including representatives from Bangla Tribune and Channel 24, no evidence of any attack or injury was found. Bangla Tribune’s DU correspondent Abid Hasan Russell explained:“On Thursday evening, a group of students demanded a roadmap for DUCSU elections, while Chhatra Dal demanded reforms to the DUCSU constitution before any elections. The VC and Proctor assured them there were no discussions on DUCSU in the Syndicate meeting. The groups then dispersed peacefully. There was no attack.”Channel 24’s DU correspondent Mohammad Borhan Uddin also confirmed:“The rumor is false. While verbal exchanges did occur, there were no incidents of injuries or attacks.”
