A claim has been circulating on social media stating that “Indian sugar is being mixed with arsenic, and Dhaka’s Science Lab has confirmed this.”
Fact-Check
Rumor Scanner’s investigation reveals that this claim is false. It has been propagated without any credible evidence or reliable source linking the information to the Science Lab.
Upon examining the social media posts promoting this claim, it was noted that Dhaka’s Science Lab was cited as the source. However, a search using relevant keywords did not yield any reports or evidence supporting this claim from the media or credible sources.
For context, Dhaka’s Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) is commonly referred to as Science Lab. It is a multidisciplinary research institution funded by the Government of Bangladesh. A review of the organization’s official Facebook page and website also found no evidence supporting the claim.
To further verify the matter, Rumor Scanner contacted Dr. Mohammad Shah Jamal, Officer-in-Charge of the Analytical Service Cell at BCSIR’s Institute of Food Science and Technology. Dr. Jamal confirmed that the circulated claim is entirely false.
The claim that Indian sugar contains arsenic, allegedly based on information from Science Lab, is baseless and untrue.
