On February 23, a gold trader named Anwar was shot in the capital's Banasree area, and assailants seized 200 tolas of gold along with 100,000 taka in cash from him. A claim has been circulating on social media stating that he was killed in the attack.
Fact-check
An investigation by the Rumor Scanner Team has revealed that although the victim, Anwar, sustained gunshot wounds in the robbery, he is now out of danger. Furthermore, there have been no reports of any fatalities in connection with the incident.
According to a report published by the national daily Prothom Alo on February 24, Anwar was shot and robbed while returning home from his shop on February 23. Citing sources from Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the report stated that Anwar was admitted to the hospital with gunshot injuries, and medical treatment is ongoing. He sustained four bullet wounds.
Later that night, Prothom Alo published a video statement of Anwar on its website, where he recounted the attack. A review of reports from various other media outlets also found no mention of his death.
Therefore, the claim that a person was killed in the armed robbery involving 200 tolas of gold in Banasree is entirely false.
