A protest video demanding the release of Chinmoy Krishna was recently circulated on social media, claiming the demonstration took place in Kolkata. However, the footage being shared does not originate from any protest in Kolkata related to Chinmoy Krishna. On November 25, Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson for the Bangladesh United Sanatani Jagaran Alliance, was arrested at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport under a sedition case filed over allegations of insulting the national flag. Following this, claims of a demonstration in Kolkata demanding his release emerged, accompanied by a video shared on social platforms.
Fact-check
An investigation by the Rumor Scanner team reveals that the video being circulated is not from any demonstration in Kolkata calling for Chinmoy Krishna’s release. Rather, it originates from a protest rally organized by the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. A reverse image search identified a video posted on March 6 by a YouTube channel named MR vlogger. On reviewing the footage, strong similarities with the video in question were found. The translated title of the YouTube video indicates that it depicts a motorcycle rally held by RPP in Kathmandu. Additionally, the beginning of the video shows a member of the law enforcement wearing a vest labeled "NEPAL POLICE."
Following this lead, a keyword search uncovered a report on the Nepali media outlet Setopati, published on March 5 under the headline “RPP holds motorcycle rally from Baber Mahal to Narayanhiti (Pictures).” The report confirms that on March 5, Nepal’s Rastriya Prajatantra Party organized a motorcycle rally from Baber Mahal to Narayanhiti in Kathmandu. Further corroboration from another media outlet indicates that the rally advocated for the restoration of monarchy in Nepal, the reestablishment of a Hindu state, the abolition of provincial divisions, the elimination of corruption, and the promotion of foreign investment.
Therefore, it is misleading to circulate a video from Nepal as if it were footage of a demonstration in Kolkata demanding the release of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari.
