The Centre for Governance Studies (CGS) organized a Fact-Checking Workshop today at RDRS Bangladesh, Rangpur. As part of its commitment to combat misinformation and strengthen responsible journalism, CGS has been conducting such workshops across all eight divisions of Bangladesh. The Rangpur workshop is part of this ongoing nationwide initiative. Journalists from 22 prominent national and regional media houses participated in the session.
The workshop was facilitated by Qadaruddin Shishir, Editor at Descent and former Fact-Checking Editor at AFP Bangladesh, who conducted intensive training on contemporary verification tools, digital forensic techniques, social media misinformation tracking, and open-source investigative strategies. He remarked, “The need for credible fact-checking in Bangladesh has become more urgent, especially in the aftermath of the August 5 uprising. Misinformation has not only fueled confusion but also posed significant risks to public discourse and stability. The good news is that Bangladesh is gradually developing a strong fact-checking ecosystem, and initiatives like these workshops by CGS are playing a vital role in that transformation. I sincerely thank CGS for bringing this effort to every corner of the country.”
The journalists praised the training for its depth and timeliness. A senior journalist noted, “This workshop has made it clear that fact-checking is no longer a luxury but a necessity in newsroom practices. The tools we explored today are directly applicable to the work we do every day.” A female journalist added, “I feel more empowered after this session. The techniques taught here will help me identify false narratives more confidently and report more responsibly.”
Participants were also introduced to the CGS-developed misinformation tracking platform, Fact-Checking Hub (www.factcheckinghub.com). This platform aggregates verified information from multiple reputed fact-checking organizations and offers real-time updates on misinformation trends in Bangladesh. Journalists recognized the platform as a powerful and essential resource in their daily reporting work.
