A video featuring Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff, Asim Munir, is being circulated on social media platform Facebook, with claims that he is delivering a speech in preparation for a war against India. However, fact-checking reveals that the video is not recent. It was originally recorded on August 14, 2024, during Pakistan’s Independence Day celebration. The video has no connection to the current tensions between India and Pakistan.
One such Facebook post includes the caption, “Modi and the entire India are panicked by Hafiz Saheb’s speech; one can become Army Chief even after studying in a madrasa!! The Pakistan Army Chief is giving a speech before the war with India… Alhamdulillah.” The video shows General Asim Munir delivering a speech, during which he is heard reciting verses from the Islamic holy book, the Quran, and providing their translations.
Upon verification, the video was found on the official YouTube channel of Pakistani media outlet Dawn News. It was published on August 14, 2024, under the title “Full Speech: Pakistan Army Chief Speaks at ‘Azadi Parade 2024’ in Kakul.” The speech begins at 10 minutes and 22 seconds into the 20-minute-long video, where General Asim Munir is seen delivering the same remarks as in the video now being circulated with misleading claims.
It is worth noting that on April 22, a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals. Following the incident, tensions have escalated between India and Pakistan, and there have been multiple instances of cross-border firing along the Kashmir frontier.
