Recently, a digitally altered photocard has been circulated featuring a supposed statement from BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, attributing the comment “Hasina was forced to flee in the July movement under Tarique Rahman’s leadership” to him. The photocard is designed in the style of the newspaper Jonokantho and includes an image allegedly portraying Tarique Rahman.
Fact-check
Investigation by the Rumor Scanner team confirms that Mirza Fakhrul did not make the statement “Hasina was forced to flee in the July movement under the leadership of Tarique Rahman.” Furthermore, Jonokantho has neither published any such news nor issued any photocard making this claim. The circulated photocard is fabricated and has been created through digital editing techniques.
Upon reviewing the photocard in question, it was found to bear Jonokantho’s logo, but it does not include a publication date, which is typically present in authentic photo cards issued by the newspaper in the same design format.
Additionally, no such photocard matching this claim has been found on Jonokantho’s official Facebook page. A comparative analysis of the design elements reveals discrepancies between this photocard and legitimate ones previously published by Jonokantho, particularly in the typography used, further indicating that the photocard is not authentic.
The image used in the photocard has also been digitally manipulated—Tarique Rahman’s face has been superimposed over another individual’s face.
Moreover, no credible media outlet has reported any such statement by Mirza Fakhrul. While some BNP leaders have, at various times, referred to Tarique Rahman as the “key figure in the July uprising” (1, 2), there is no evidence supporting the specific claim that Mirza Fakhrul stated Prime Minister Hasina was forced to flee during the movement.
Therefore, the photocard circulated under the name of Jonokantho claiming that “Hasina was forced to flee in the July movement under Tarique’s leadership,” as attributed to Mirza Fakhrul, is false and fabricated.
