Recently, a claim regarding the disclosure of the mastermind behind the widely discussed murder of journalist couple Sagar and Runi has been circulating on social media.

An investigation by the Rumor Scanner Team reveals that the claim about disclosing the identity of the mastermind behind the murder of the journalist couple Sagar-Runi is unfounded. The claim is being spread without any supporting evidence.

At the beginning of the investigation, comments under several Facebook posts making this claim referred to a blog post as the source. The link led to a post titled “Breaking News: Name of the Mastermind Behind Sagar-Runi Murder Case Revealed After 13 Years.”

Rumor Scanner’s analysis finds that the blog, published under the free domain blogspot site “liveenewsbd,” is evidently an unreliable and obscure platform.

The report claims, citing national daily Kalbela as its source, that “In 2012, journalist couple Sagar Sarowar, news editor of Maasranga TV, and Meherun Runi, senior correspondent of ATN Bangla, were brutally murdered in a rented apartment in the capital’s West Rajabazar. Runi’s brother, Nawshad Alam, filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. Thirteen years have passed since the murder, and their son Megh has not seen justice for his parents. A task force was formed after August 5 to uncover the mystery behind the murder. As part of the investigation, former army officer Ziaul Ahsan was extensively interrogated.

On January 15, he was questioned inside Dhaka Central Jail, located in Rajendrapur, Keraniganj, near Dhaka. The following day, Task Force Chairman and Chief of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Mostafa Kamal told the media that Ziaul Ahsan, then Director of the Intelligence Unit of RAB, had visited the residence of Sagar-Runi after the murder. During interrogation, he stated that he had arrived at the crime scene around 8 AM that day. This led to much discussion about him on social media. He was asked whether he knew anything about the murder and whether he had any statements regarding the investigation.

According to PBI sources, members of the task force investigating the murder visited Dhaka Central Jail on Friday morning and interrogated him for about two hours.

Earlier, on Monday, members of the task force questioned Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, former president of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), at the PBI office in Dhaka. On December 30 of last year, ATN Bangla Chairman Mahfuzur Rahman was also interrogated.”

Nowhere in the blog post is the name of the mastermind behind the Sagar-Runi murder mentioned. Subsequent observation of Kalbela’s website revealed no information supporting the claim. No related news was found on the newspaper’s Facebook page or YouTube channel either.

Furthermore, relevant keyword searches across other media outlets also failed to yield any supporting information for the claim. It is worth noting that, according to the task force report on the Sagar-Runi murder, the couple was indeed killed, and two individuals were involved in the sensational murder. However, due to inconclusive DNA evidence, the killers could not be identified.

Therefore, the claim titled “Name of the Mastermind Behind the Sagar-Runi Murder Revealed After 13 Years” is entirely false.
