A video titled “India threatened not to give water to Pakistan, now water is going automatically after dam broke (Modi’s chair broke)” has recently circulated on social media. The implication is that a dam in India has recently collapsed, causing water to flow into Pakistan, allegedly in contradiction to earlier political statements.

Fact-check

Rumor Scanner Team’s investigation reveals that the circulated video does not depict a recent dam collapse in India leading to water flow into Pakistan. Rather, the footage is from the partial collapse of a 91-year-old dam in the state of Texas, USA, which occurred in May 2019. This video has been reused to support the misleading claim.

In the course of the investigation, a video titled “VIDEO: Texas’ Lake Dunlap Dam collapse caught on camera,” published on May 16, 2019, was found on the official YouTube channel of local U.S. news outlet ‘CBS 17’. The footage in that video matches the visuals in the one being currently shared.

Additionally, using relevant keywords, a report titled “Watch 91-year-old dam partially collapse” was found on the website of international news outlet CNN. According to that report, “A 91-year-old dam in Texas partially collapsed, and it was captured on camera. As a result, a nearby lake dropped by seven feet, officials reported.” (Translated)

In summary, the video being shared as evidence of a recent Indian dam collapse and water flowing into Pakistan predates current events and has been on the internet long before recent tensions between India and Pakistan.

It is worth noting that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated on May 22, a month after a terror attack in Kashmir, that Pakistan would not receive water from rivers India has rights over. Following the attack, New Delhi suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with its neighbor.

Therefore, the claim that the video shows water flowing from India to Pakistan due to a recent dam collapse is false. The footage actually depicts a partial dam collapse that occurred in the United States in 2019.
