A video interview recently circulated on social media, captioned with the claim, “Listen to the words of the people of Bangladesh — real and true,” has sparked controversy. In the clip, one individual responds to the question, “Uncle, what are the virtues of the BNP?” by saying, “The BNP has many virtues — 150 murders in nine months. They collect extortion money in Paltan, and a share of it goes to London.”
The same quote was also added to the caption and distributed from several Facebook pages, including a verified account operated under the name of former Sylhet mayor Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury. As there was no disclaimer indicating whether the video was real or fake, many viewers took it at face value and commented accordingly.
Fact Check
An investigation by the Rumor Scanner team reveals that the widely circulated video is not an authentic recording of a public statement. Instead, it is a fabricated video generated using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
No credible news outlet or reliable source has confirmed the existence of such an original interview. The team traced the likely origin of the video to a TikTok account named “AI Manob,” where it was uploaded on July 1. Notably, the watermark “AI Manob” is also visible on the viral video.
Reviewing the TikTok account reveals multiple AI-generated videos published over time. The voice and visual context in the video also exhibit certain abnormalities, indicating signs of digital manipulation.
To confirm its authenticity, the video was analyzed using the AI content detection platform “Cantilux,” which found a 95 percent probability that the video was AI-generated. Another detection platform, “Hive Moderation,” reported a 99.7 percent probability of AI generation.
In a separate context, a report published by BBC Bangla in May claimed that more than 50 people were killed due to internal conflicts within the BNP since August 5. Additionally, leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP) alleged that 123 people were killed by BNP activists between August 7 of last year and June 7 of this year, during the ten months following the fall of the Awami League government. However, this allegation was disputed in a separate report, which was shared from the verified Facebook page of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, expressing a dissenting opinion.
Therefore, presenting an AI-generated video as an authentic public statement claiming, “The BNP has many virtues — 150 murders in nine months. They collect extortion money in Paltan, and a share of it goes to London,” and promoting it on social media is misleading.
