Multiple Old Videos Shared Claiming Attacks on BNP Offices Across the Country
12 July 2025 Political
One of the videos circulating on social media claims that NCP and Jamaat-Shibir activists set fire to a BNP office in Cumilla.

Several old videos have been circulated throughout July 12 on social media, claiming that the Nationalist Democratic Party (NCP) and Jamaat-Shibir carried out attacks and arson at BNP offices in Dhaka, Cumilla, Jashore, and Jhenaidah. Dismislab reviewed five such videos alleging attacks on BNP offices at different locations and confirmed that all of them are outdated. These videos were shared with false claims that the incidents occurred during protests following the killing of a scrap dealer named Sohag near Dhaka's Mitford Hospital.

One of the videos circulating on social media claims that NCP and Jamaat-Shibir activists set fire to a BNP office in Cumilla. However, verification reveals that the video is not recent; it documents events from May 17, 2025. On that day, BNP activists who were denied party positions staged a protest in Kandirpar, Cumilla, and later set fire to an unused office of the party’s South District and Metropolitan units located on Victoria College Road. Clips from the video are also found in a report aired by Somoy TV on May 18, and a detailed article was published by Prothom Alo. The same footage has also been circulated with claims that common people set fire to BNP’s central office in Dhaka during protests against the murder of Sohag.

Another video circulating online alleges that NCP and Jamaat-Shibir members vandalized and set fire to the BNP office in Kaliganj, Jhenaidah. However, this video also turns out to be old. Reporters from Kaler Kantho and Kalbela in Jhenaidah confirmed to Dismislab that the footage is not from a recent event. Aritra Kundu, Kaler Kantho’s Jhenaidah correspondent, said he visited the scene after watching the video and found no signs of vandalism or fire. After speaking to local BNP leaders and administrative officials, he learned that the footage was taken during a student protest on August 4, 2024, when a pro-Awami League group attacked the office. On July 12, Kundu also sent Dismislab a current photo of the office, which shows no visible damage. This information was corroborated by Mahmud Hasan Tipu, bureau chief of Kalbela in Jhenaidah. According to media reports, on August 4, 2024, during a student-led movement, Awami League activists attacked and set fire to the BNP office on Thana Road in Kaliganj. A case was later filed naming 94 Awami League members.

Another video shared on July 12 claims that a BNP office in Jashore was set ablaze in front of over a hundred people. However, verification reveals that the video was not filmed in Jashore but in Lalmonirhat during an attack in October 2023. The original footage is available on the YouTube channel of Lalmoni Post, a local news outlet. On October 29, 2023, the personal office of BNP leader Asadul Habib Dulu on Mission Road in Lalmonirhat was attacked and vandalized. Multiple news reports include descriptions and photos of the incident.

Yet another video was spread with the claim that ordinary people attacked the BNP central office in Khilkhet, Dhaka. The video in question is actually from a joint-force eviction drive conducted on June 26, 2025. The footage is available on the YouTube channel of Jago News, which identifies the event as an eviction operation by law enforcement, not a public attack. The video documents the removal of illegal structures near Khilkhet Railgate, during which security personnel were present. Therefore, the claim about a recent attack is false, and the video is at least two weeks old.

A final video claims that the BNP office in Rupganj, Narayanganj, was set on fire. The footage was shared via a Facebook page named Muktibahini, using a clip from a report by Ekattor TV. Verification shows that the original Ekattor TV report was published on October 8 of the previous year, indicating that the incident is not recent.

On Wednesday, scrap dealer Sohag was brutally beaten and hacked to death in front of Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka. In response, the Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal, and Swechchhasebak Dal announced the permanent expulsion of four members from their organizations. Following this, protests and rallies were held across the country on Saturday. It is in this context that multiple old videos were circulated on social media, falsely suggesting that NCP and Jamaat-Shibir were behind spontaneous public attacks on BNP offices.
