On July 21, following the crash of a training aircraft in Dhaka’s Uttara area near Milestone School, several videos began circulating online. Among them, two videos were widely shared on Facebook with captions such as “Plane Crash at Milestone College” and “How the Training Plane Crashed into the School in Uttara.” A fact-check investigation by FactWatch indicates that both of these videos were generated using artificial intelligence.
Sample 1:
A video captioned “Plane Crash at Milestone College” was shared from a Facebook account named Dr-Rabby Alam. Upon reviewing the 8-second video, it was observed to be unusually clear. Typically, real footage of plane crashes does not exhibit this level of clarity. A watermark reading “Veo” is visible in the corner of the video. Videos of this type can be created using Google’s Veo-3 tool.
Additionally, the building in the video has the name “MILESTTONE COLLEGE” written on it, featuring a double “T,” whereas the correct English spelling of the institution is “Milestone College.” Several other inconsistencies are present. For instance, the people supposedly filming during the moment of impact do not appear lifelike. Reports from mainstream media confirm that the aircraft crashed onto the roof of Milestone College’s canteen building, which is two stories high—not a high-rise. In contrast, the video depicts the plane crashing onto the roof of a multi-storey building. Upon evaluating all these discrepancies, the video is found to be artificially generated using technology.
Sample 2:
Another video was shared with the caption, “How the training plane crashed into the school in Uttara.” This video, lasting 11 seconds, is also exceptionally clear.
In the footage, the aircraft is seen crashing into the middle section of a multi-storey building, causing an explosion. However, when reviewing credible reports from July 21 regarding the Milestone College incident, it becomes evident that the crash did not resemble the sequence shown in this video. Investigation of authentic footage of the incident indicates that the discussed video is unrelated to the Milestone College crash.
A reverse image search using various key frames from the video revealed no resemblance to any known footage of real aircraft accidents. The exceptional clarity and camera movement patterns suggest the video may have been created with artificial intelligence. Upon further review using the deepfake detection platform “Deep Fake-o-Meter,” it appears likely that the video was indeed generated through AI tools.
Based on the evaluation of these two videos, it is concluded that both are AI-generated. Therefore, posts presenting them as footage of the Milestone College incident without mentioning their artificial nature are deemed misleading.
