On the night of August 29, a clash erupted in Bijoynagar between activists of the Jatiya Party and the Gono Odhikar Parishad. Law enforcement intervened to disperse both sides using force. During the baton charge, Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, General Secretary Rashed Khan, and several others sustained injuries. In the aftermath, a photograph of a man circulated widely online, accompanied by the claim: “Breaking News. This person’s name is Shiv Shankar Das. He is not Bangladeshi, but an Indian national. He is a member of R&AW. He was assigned to assassinate Nur.”
Fact Check
The Rumor Scanner Team investigated the claim and found that the widely circulated image does not depict anyone named Shiv Shankar Das assigned to assassinate Nurul Haque Nur. Instead, it was artificially generated using a photo of Constable Mizanur Rahman, who serves as the driver of the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Paltan Police Station.
A reverse image search led to a report published by mainstream media outlet Inqilab on August 31 under the headline “The Young Man in Red T-Shirt Is the Driver of Paltan OC’s Vehicle.” The report included a photograph that closely resembles the one circulated online. It stated: “The youth who went viral for baton-charging Gono Odhikar Parishad leaders is Mizanur Rahman, the driver of the OC of Paltan Police Station. This information was confirmed by police officials on Saturday (August 30). The constable is currently in police custody.” A police source said that Constable Mizanur Rahman (BP number-9717197243) serves as the driver for OC Nasirul Amin of Paltan Police Station and has been in hiding since the incident. Efforts are underway to locate him. Another police source claimed he is already in custody and is in contact with absconding police officers and leaders of the Awami League, prompting multiple intelligence agencies to launch an investigation. Meanwhile, there were also rumors that the youth was affiliated with the Detective Branch (DB), which DB Chief Shafiqul Islam denied. When asked about Mizanur Rahman’s whereabouts, no comment was available from the OC of Paltan Police Station.
Further, the same photograph appeared in various other posts concerning Constable Mizanur Rahman. Another report, published on August 30 by mainstream daily Amader Shomoy under the headline “The Man in Maroon Polo Shirt Is the Driver of Paltan OC’s Vehicle,” stated: “On Friday (August 29), Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur and other activists were assaulted in Dhaka’s Paltan area. A video that circulated on social media showed a man in a maroon polo shirt assaulting an activist, sparking widespread discussion about his identity.”
Investigations revealed that the man in the maroon shirt is Constable Mizanur Rahman, who serves as the driver for OC Nasirul Amin of Paltan Police Station. Many claimed Mizanur was the one who beat Nurul Haque Nur. However, the party’s General Secretary Muhammad Rashed Khan posted on Facebook stating that the uniformed man seen in the video assaulted student leader Samrat, not Nur.
The report also included a photo of Mizanur Rahman taken during the clash. When compared with the AI-generated image, clear similarities were found in clothing, setting, and facial features.
However, when analyzing the image circulated with the claim, certain facial distortions and environmental inconsistencies are evident—traits commonly associated with AI-generated images. This strongly suggests that the image in question was generated using artificial intelligence based on a photo of Constable Mizanur Rahman.
To further verify the image, it was analyzed using Hive Moderation, an AI content detection platform. The platform estimated a 79.7% probability that the image was AI-generated. Additionally, Deepfake-o-meter, another platform specializing in detecting AI and deepfake content, also suggested that the image is likely fabricated using AI technology.
Thus, it is confirmed that the image is artificially generated using AI. Moreover, no credible evidence has been found to support the claim that any individual named Shiv Shankar Das was assigned to assassinate Nurul Haque Nur.
In conclusion, the photo of Constable Mizanur Rahman, who serves as the driver of the OC of Paltan Police Station, was manipulated using artificial intelligence and falsely promoted as an image of a R&AW agent named Shiv Shankar Das, allegedly assigned to assassinate Nurul Haque Nur. This claim is false.
