Fact-check

An investigation by the Rumor Scanner team reveals that the circulated video is not from India. In reality, it shows scenes from a recent protest in Nepal, misrepresented as an anti-Modi movement in India.

Through reverse image searches of several keyframes from the video, a matching video was found posted on the ‘African Hub’ account on X on September 11. The footage in question aligns with the viral video and shows protesters in Nepal clashing with police. The description confirms it captures the moment when demonstrators confronted law enforcement during a protest.

Based on this lead, a keyword-based search uncovered a related report published on CBC News’ website on September 8, titled “At least 19 killed as police open fire on Nepal protests over corruption, social media ban.”

According to that report, at least 19 people were killed and over a hundred injured in Nepal after police opened fire on young protesters demonstrating against corruption and a social media ban. The protest is reported to be led by Generation Z, reflecting widespread frustration among youth over corruption, unemployment, and state repression.

Notably, amid this youth-led uprising, the government of K.P. Sharma Oli collapsed, and Sushila Karki was sworn in as the interim Prime Minister. She announced she would not serve for more than six months and that power would be transferred to an elected government after the national election scheduled for March 5 next year.

Therefore, the video depicting clashes between protesters and police in Nepal has been falsely circulated as footage of a recent anti-Modi protest in India. This claim is false.
