A one-minute video has recently been circulated on Facebook, claiming that the Bangladesh Army recovered weapons from the room of the president of Shibir at Nawab Abdul Latif Hall of Rajshahi University. Another fake Facebook page, operating under the name of Dainik Amar Desh, shared the same video, asserting that the weapons were recovered from the room of the president of Chhatra Dal at the same hall. However, an investigation by FactWatch has found these claims to be entirely false. The weapons in question were actually looted from Tongibari police station in Munshiganj during last year’s coup attempt to overthrow the government. The army later recovered the weapons and handed them back to the police station.
Key frames from the viral video were extracted and subjected to reverse image searches, which led to a Facebook page named Md Sowkat Hossan. The page belongs to the Lohajang correspondent of Dainik Inqilab. The video in question was originally posted by Sowkat Hossan on August 18, 2024, with a caption stating that the weapons shown in the footage were the same as those looted from Tongibari police station, which the army later retrieved and handed over to the police.
The recently circulated video, which claims the incident occurred at Rajshahi University, is identical to the one previously posted by Sowkat Hossan. Further verification from multiple national news sources confirms that on August 18, 2024, the army handed over weapons looted from Tongibari and other police stations in Munshiganj to law enforcement agencies. These weapons included 79 firearms and 3,891 rounds of ammunition.
Additionally, no credible sources have reported any incident of such a large number of weapons being recovered from the rooms of Shibir or Chhatra Dal leaders at Rajshahi University. A report published in Dainik Samakal, citing RU Proctor Professor Mahbubur Rahman, states that the university authorities had heard similar claims from various sources but found no evidence to support them after verification. He confirmed that the news of weapon recovery from the hall was completely baseless and a mere rumor.
Based on these findings, FactWatch has confirmed that the claim of weapons being recovered from the rooms of Shibir or Chhatra Dal leaders at a Rajshahi University hall is false.
