A video claiming that the United States has declared Dr. Muhammad Yunus a traitor and imposed sanctions on him for dishonoring Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has recently gone viral on the internet.
A fact-check by the Rumor Scanner team has confirmed that the claim is entirely false. There is no evidence to support the allegation that the United States has labeled Dr. Yunus a traitor or sanctioned him for defaming Bangabandhu and Sheikh Hasina. The widely circulated video was compiled by merging unrelated clips without any factual basis.
During the verification process, the Rumor Scanner team analyzed the viral video and identified two initial clips featuring news anchors delivering news reports. A reverse image search traced these clips to two separate news reports: one aired on ATN Bangla’s YouTube channel on February 3 and another on Jamuna TV’s YouTube channel on January 26. Parts of these reports match the initial clips in the viral video.
ATN Bangla’s report covered a previous fact-check by Rumor Scanner regarding the same claim. Segments from this fact-check report were extracted and re-used to misrepresent the narrative in the viral video. Similarly, at the 6-minute-50-second mark of Jamuna TV’s bulletin, a report was aired on the suspension of USAID assistance in Bangladesh. Excerpts from this report were also selectively edited and incorporated into the viral video.
The context of the original news reports does not align with the claim being circulated. Additionally, the video features short clips of statements from political figures, including advisor Nahid Islam, former Chhatra League president and BNP leader Fazlur Rahman, Gana Odhikar Parishad leader Nurul Haque Nur, Golam Mawla Rony, and former state minister Sohel Taj. However, in these clips, none of the individuals mention anything about the United States declaring Dr. Yunus a traitor or imposing sanctions due to defamation of Bangabandhu and Sheikh Hasina.
Furthermore, an inquiry into the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s official website found no record of sanctions imposed on Dr. Yunus or 20 other individuals. A keyword search across national and international media outlets also yielded no supporting evidence for the claim.
Therefore, the assertion that the United States has declared Dr. Muhammad Yunus a traitor and sanctioned him for insulting Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina is entirely false.
