On August 16, 2024, the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) published a preliminary report on the violence that took place in Bangladesh surrounding the anti-discrimination student movement and demands for government resignation in July and August of that year. Following further analysis of the events, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) officially released a detailed fact-finding report from Geneva on February 12. In response, a press release titled “Protest Statement Against the So-Called Press Conference and Statement of the United Nations Human Rights Commission” has recently been circulated on social media platform Facebook.
Fact-check
An investigation by the Rumor Scanner team has revealed that Bangladesh Awami League did not issue any press release regarding the UN report on the July-August protests. Instead, the press release in question was fabricated using misleading information under the party’s name.
Upon reviewing the document, it was found that the press release was dated February 13. Typically, Bangladesh Awami League shares its official press releases through its verified Facebook page. However, an inspection of the party’s verified page found no evidence of this particular press release being published. Additionally, the design and typography of the circulated press release differ from those used in the official statements posted on the Awami League’s Facebook page.
Although the fabricated press release was not found on the party’s official page, a post dated February 14 was discovered under the title “Bangladesh Awami League Rejects the Biased Report of the UN Fact-Finding Team Published at the Request of the Murderous Fascist Yunus Government.” A review of this statement found no resemblance to the content of the circulated press release.
Therefore, the press release titled “Protest Statement Against the So-Called Press Conference and Statement of the United Nations Human Rights Commission” and attributed to Bangladesh Awami League is entirely false and fabricated.
