Fact-check

An investigation by the Rumor Scanner team reveals that the claim that Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir members set fire to a Hindu home in Netrokona is false. In reality, the circulated video is from a fire incident that occurred in Khagrachari in 2024. Moreover, the affected family in that incident is not Hindu but Muslim. A reverse image search led to a Facebook post by an account named M F Rabby, published on October 23, 2024, featuring the video in question. The post includes not only the discussed video but also another video and a photograph of the same fire incident. In the post title, the user mentions another person named Mohammad M S Roni and expresses helplessness for not being able to assist him. The post further indicates that the incident took place in the Guimara area of Khagrachari.

Following this lead, a review of Mohammad M S Roni’s Facebook profile shows that the same video was shared as a reel on March 17 of the current year. In the title of the post, he states that the fire occurred on October 23, 2024. It is also revealed in the post that the burnt house belongs to him. Based on this information, an examination of his past posts led to the discovery of an earlier post made on October 24 last year, which confirms the same details.
