Fact-Check

Investigation by the Rumor Scanner team confirms that the video in question is not recent. Instead, it originates from 2022 and captures a protest rally held in front of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The rally was organized in response to the ban on hijab in educational institutions in the Indian state of Karnataka.

The investigation began with a reverse image search of key frames from the video, which led to a Facebook live video posted by an account named “Muhammad Zubair Hossain Saeed” on February 18, 2022. The video was captioned, “A protest rally is ongoing at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram in response to the hijab ban in Karnataka, India, and the uncontrolled rise in commodity prices in Bangladesh.” The segment from 19 minutes and 3 seconds to 19 minutes and 40 seconds of that video matches the footage being circulated with the claim.

Based on the content of the video, a keyword search revealed a report published on the website of the online news outlet NewsBangla24.com on February 18, 2022. The report was titled “Threat to Travel to India if Hijab Is Banned.”

According to the report, the Islamic Movement Bangladesh organized a protest after Friday prayers on February 18, 2022, at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, opposing the hijab ban in Karnataka. The group warned of a movement toward India if the restriction on wearing hijab was not withdrawn. During the protest, slogans were raised against the hijab ban in Karnataka. At that time, several news outlets in Bangladesh published reports on the event.

Therefore, the viral video containing threats against members of the Hindu community was actually recorded during the 2022 protest rally at the gate of the Baitul Mukarram Mosque, held in response to the hijab ban in Karnataka, India. Presenting this video as a recent incident is misleading.
