Multiple Indian media outlets have falsely reported that Sohag, who was murdered in front of Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital (Mitford Hospital) in Dhaka, was a follower of the Hindu faith. According to the Press Wing of the Chief Adviser, the deceased scrap trader Sohag was inaccurately identified as Hindu in several Indian news reports. This information was confirmed on Sunday through a post on the verified Facebook page of CA Press Wing Facts, the fact-checking unit of the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.

The Press Wing stated that Indian media platforms, including NDTV, India Today, and ETV Bharat, published misleading reports claiming that the murdered businessman, identified as Lal Chand alias Sohag (aged 39), was Hindu. The incident took place near Gate No. 3 of Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital, in the Mitford area of the capital.

Sohag’s father is Md. Ayub Ali, and his mother is Aleya Begum. At the time of his death, he left behind his wife Lucky Begum, sister Fatema, and only son Sohan. On July 9, Sohag was brutally beaten to death by a group of assailants in front of the hospital gate. Even after confirming his death, his lifeless body was struck with a boulder. A video of the gruesome killing circulated widely on social media, sparking nationwide outrage. So far, seven individuals have been taken into police custody in connection with the murder.

Following funeral prayers on Sunday, Sohag was buried next to his mother’s grave in his ancestral village, Bandargachhia, located in Ward 7 of Dhalua Union in Barguna Sadar Upazila. The Indian media outlets that identified Sohag as Hindu did not provide any clear information about his religion or family background in their reports. Indian news media frequently disseminate unverified and incorrect information under the guise of reporting on minority persecution in Bangladesh.
