A screenshot of a translated headline from a Bangladeshi media outlet was recently circulated on the social media platform X. The headline, translated into English, reads: “2,616 murders, 15,000 women and children abused in 8 months: Interim Government.” The post was shared with the caption: “They’ve finally admitted it – what’s happening to Hindus in Bangladesh. #SaveBangladeshiHindus.”

Fact-check

An investigation by the Rumor Scanner team found that the statistics presented in the shared content refer to the overall national crime data from 2020 to August 2025. These figures are not based on crimes committed against any specific community, including Hindus.

The posts promoting this claim used a translated version of a report originally published on the website of Independent TV, a private television channel in Bangladesh, under the headline: “2,616 murders, 15,000 women and children abused in 8 months: Interim Government.”

The investigation located the report on the channel’s website. According to the report, “In the first eight months of this year, there have been 2,616 cases of murder and 15,049 incidents of violence against women and children, according to the interim government.” The interim government’s press wing compiled and published a comparative overview based on data collected from September 9, 2020, to August 2025.

The press release noted, “Although the number of murders appears higher during the last 13 months of the interim government, part of the reason is that after the mass uprising that followed the discovery of at least 1,130 murders during Sheikh Hasina’s 16-year tenure, legal cases were filed between August 6, 2024, and August of this year. Previously, many of these murder cases had not been reported due to threats from ruling party-affiliated criminals, and the police had been discouraged from registering them. These cases have only been recorded following the change in government.”

Other media outlets have also reported similar findings. These reports consistently indicate that the published figures represent the overall crime situation in the country.

The same statistics were later shared through the official Facebook page of the Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh (Chief Adviser GOB), clearly stating that the figures represent a comparative overview of national crime data from 2020 to August 2025.

Therefore, the claim that these statistics represent violence specifically against Hindus is misleading.
