The claim that TikTok will be shut down from Sunday has been circulating on social media platforms such as Facebook and TikTok. However, a fact-checking investigation reveals that this claim is unrelated to Bangladesh. A keyword search led to a report published on January 15 by Bdnews24.com titled "TikTok prepares to shut down in the US from Sunday." According to the report, TikTok is facing a ban in the United States due to national security concerns over its Chinese ownership. If the Supreme Court does not take effective measures to block the ban, the federal restriction law will come into effect, and TikTok will be shut down for American users from Sunday. As a result, new users will be unable to download the app, although existing users can continue using it for a limited period.

It is important to note that in April last year, President Joe Biden signed a law requiring TikTok to sell its US-based operations by January 19, 2025. If the company fails to do so within the stipulated time, a nationwide ban on TikTok will take effect. Further verification from the international news agency Reuters found a similar report titled “TikTok prepares to shut down app in US on Sunday, sources say.” Several other international media outlets also reported the same information.

The misleading aspect of the social media posts is that they do not mention the context of the United States, leading many users to assume that the ban applies to Bangladesh. Therefore, the claim that TikTok will be shut down from Sunday is related to legal complications in the United States, and its omission in social media posts has confused users.
