An investigation by the Rumor Scanner team has revealed that the viral image of the purported frozen waterfall in the Italian Alps is not real; rather, it was generated using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
During the initial phase of the investigation, the Rumor Scanner team conducted a thorough analysis of the image, identifying several inconsistencies typically found in AI-generated images. These anomalies included irregularities in the color of the ice and the structure of the mountains. Furthermore, the distribution of light and shadow in the image appeared unnatural.
A relevant keyword search for frozen waterfalls in the Italian Alps led to the discovery of Fontanone di Goriuda, a well-known waterfall located in the Val Raccolana valley of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. In winter, this waterfall is known to freeze completely. However, upon comparing authentic images available online with the viral image, significant discrepancies were observed.
To further validate the findings, the Rumor Scanner team utilized Hive Moderation, an AI detection website. The analysis conducted on this platform indicated with 99 percent certainty that the image in question was generated using AI technology.
Therefore, it has been confirmed that an AI-generated image was falsely circulated online as a real depiction of a frozen waterfall in the Italian Alps, leading to misinformation.
