A six-second video circulated on social media shows a handcuffed individual being struck with a stick in a court premises, while three police officers stand nearby. The video’s caption claims it depicts a mob attack in a Bangladeshi court area. However, fact-checking by Dismislab confirms that the video is not authentic; it was generated using artificial intelligence. The footage was created using an AI prompt based on a published photograph of Junel Mia, a suspect in a Moulvibazar murder case, during his court appearance.
Several Facebook users recently shared the video, asserting that it shows a mob attack in a Bangladeshi court. One caption reads, “We don’t know if this nation has ever witnessed such a disgraceful judiciary and inhuman mob before. If life is not safe even in a court compound, where is our safety? The nation is in the grip of mob rule.” A profile named ‘Bangladesh Chhatra League’ also shared the video with similar claims. As of now, it has been viewed over 686,000 times, shared more than 1,200 times, and received over 700 reactions.
Analysis of the video reveals a logo and text at the bottom-right corner reading “Minimax. Hailo AI,” confirming that it was created using Minimax-Hailo’s generative AI model.
Minimax AI is a Shanghai-based artificial intelligence company. Hailo AI is its text-to-video model, which allows users to generate realistic video footage based on scripted prompts.
In the six-second video, a man appears from behind and strikes the head of a handcuffed individual standing in the center. Upon impact, the individual falls. At that moment, the two police officers standing beside him turn to look back, and their faces become visibly blurred and distorted. This facial distortion supports the conclusion that the video was AI-generated.
Reverse image search using keyframes from the video shows that the first frame precisely matches a photograph published by Daily Samakal in June. The photo shows Junel Mia, handcuffed, who was accused in the rape and murder of a schoolgirl in Kulaura upazila, Moulvibazar. The report states that he confessed to the crime during police interrogation. The photo of his court appearance was subsequently published in multiple newspapers.
In conclusion, the video circulated on social media as a real event is in fact AI-generated. It was created using the Minimax-Hailo generative AI model with the help of a photograph of Junel Mia during his court appearance.
