A recent claim has circulated alleging that General Waker-Uz-Zaman has been removed from his position as Chief of Army Staff.
Fact-check
Rumor Scanner's investigation has revealed that the claim about General Waker-Uz-Zaman’s removal is false. No credible evidence supports this claim, which has been spread without verification.
The investigation found that several Facebook posts citing this claim referenced a specific blog post as the source. Upon accessing the link, the article appeared under the headline: “Army Chief Waker Uz Zaman Removed, Who is the New Chief – Is Dr. Yunus at the Center of the Conspiracy?”
Although the site displayed the logo of Somoy TV, Rumor Scanner’s analysis identified the platform as a free Blogspot domain named “somoytvv247,” which appeared to be an unauthentic site attempting to mimic a legitimate media outlet.
The post in question was dated May 14, 2025, and claimed that an unprecedented reshuffle had occurred within the Bangladesh Army. It stated that a breaking news item had been withdrawn and that General Waker-Uz-Zaman had been secretly dismissed from his post. The article further alleged that the information had been confirmed around 12:50 AM by a “reliable government source,” and that the development was the result of a deep conspiracy. It claimed that political analysts believed interim government chief advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus was the mastermind behind the reshuffle.
The article further claimed that General Waker-Uz-Zaman had recently become highly popular within the army and that rumors suggested he was preparing to seize state power with the support of a large section of the military. It alleged that the cantonment saw heightened security measures that night, the military’s media cell was shut down, and several close officials were transferred. According to the post, this sequence of events confirmed that Waker-Uz-Zaman was no longer serving as army chief.
Additional names were floated as potential successors, including Major General (Retd.) Kamrul Hossain, Lieutenant General Saleh Chowdhury, and the current intelligence chief, Brigadier Nahid Afsar. The article quoted analysts stating, “Whoever it is, he will be part of Yunus’s alternative plan,” asserting that the new chief would be someone who shows unconditional loyalty.
Political and military commentators cited in the post claimed that “Dr. Yunus is gradually taking control of all state apparatuses,” including the media, administration, judiciary, and now the military.
The report also referenced a statement allegedly issued by the National Citizens' Party, claiming that “through this removal, Dr. Yunus is paving the way for dictatorship, betraying the spirit of the Liberation War.”
The international community has remained silent, but the article claimed that although the United States, European Union, and United Nations have not issued any statements, diplomatic sources reported that embassies in Dhaka had switched to a “report to headquarters” mode at midnight.
Ordinarily, any change or removal of the Army Chief would receive widespread coverage in mainstream media. However, no such information has been found in the media or from any credible sources supporting this claim.
Therefore, the claim that General Waker-Uz-Zaman has been removed from his position as Chief of Army Staff is entirely false.
