A video claiming to show Dr. Muhammad Yunus announcing his resignation as Chief Adviser of the interim government has recently circulated on social media. In the video, a voice resembling Dr. Yunus is heard speaking in English: “I, Mohammed Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, hereby announce my resignation. I have just resigned from the interim government.”
Fact-Check
The Rumor Scanner team’s investigation found that the video is not authentic. Instead, it features a fabricated voice clip created using artificial intelligence (AI), overlaid on footage taken from a different public appearance. Sources on Thursday, May 22, claimed Dr. Yunus was considering resignation, but on Saturday, May 24, following an ECNEC meeting, Planning Adviser Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud informed reporters that Dr. Yunus was not resigning.
In connection with the circulated video, a speech titled “Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus addresses the Nation,” published on Bayanno TV’s YouTube channel on September 11, 2024, was located. Both videos share similar backgrounds and attire. However, in the original video, Dr. Yunus does not announce any resignation.
Signs of AI manipulation were detected in the viral clip. The Rumor Scanner team tested the video using the deepfake detection tool Sensity, which flagged the video as ‘suspicious’ and indicated a 92% likelihood that the audio was artificially generated. The analysis also pointed to the presence of synthetically produced speech.
The team’s observation further revealed inconsistencies between the spoken words and lip movement, a common marker of AI-generated content.
Therefore, the video presents a false narrative by embedding a fake resignation audio into unrelated footage of Dr. Yunus, using artificial intelligence technology. The claim is entirely untrue.
