On Friday, June 13, Israel launched an attack targeting Iran’s nuclear and military installations. In response, Iran fired missiles at Israel. Following these developments, a video began circulating on social media, purportedly showing scenes from Iran’s missile attack on Israel’s capital, Tel Aviv.
Fact-check
An investigation by the Rumor Scanner Team found that the video does not depict the aftermath of the Iranian attack on Tel Aviv. Instead, it is an old video of a medical plane crash that took place in Philadelphia, United States.
As part of the investigation, a video published on February 1 on a YouTube channel named ‘Hakan Tuluhan’ was found to contain scenes identical to those in the circulated clip. The video’s description states that a Mexico-registered Learjet 55 air ambulance crashed shortly after taking off from Philadelphia Executive Airport. According to a report by Fox29, all six people on board died in the incident.
A similar video with matching visuals and information was also published on February 2 by another YouTube channel called ‘The Truth Lies.’ Therefore, the circulated footage is not from Tel Aviv.
Additional details were found in a January 31 report published by The New York Times. It stated that a small medical aircraft carrying six passengers crashed near a shopping center in northeast Philadelphia on the night of the incident. All occupants of the aircraft and one person on the ground were killed, and at least 19 others were injured. The crash triggered a fire that damaged nearby homes and vehicles.
In conclusion, a video of an old plane crash in the United States has been falsely circulated as footage from Tel Aviv following Iran’s missile attack—this claim is false.
