Ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, new banknotes of various denominations were released into circulation, including a newly designed 20 Taka note.

Ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, new banknotes of various denominations were released into circulation, including a newly designed 20 Taka note. While the previous version of the 20 Taka note featured an image of the historic Sixty Dome Mosque of Bagerhat, the newly issued note includes images of Kantajew Temple in Dinajpur and the Buddhist Monastery at Paharpur in Naogaon. This change prompted widespread discussion on social media. In the wake of the controversy, a claim began circulating on social platforms stating, “Alhamdulillah! That controversial governor has been dismissed. The one who placed the image of a temple on the 20 Taka note.”

The new note bears the signature of Governor Ahsan H. Mansur of Bangladesh Bank. The circulating claim alleges that Ahsan H. Mansur was removed from his position for incorporating the image of a temple into the design of the new note.

Fact-check

The Rumor Scanner Team investigated the claim and found that the allegation that Governor Ahsan H. Mansur was dismissed or removed for adding a temple image to the new 20 Taka note is false. The claim has been propagated without any reliable evidence or verifiable source. Ahsan H. Mansur remains in his role as Governor of Bangladesh Bank.

Upon reviewing the posts that promoted this claim, no credible sources or supporting documentation were found to validate the dismissal. Any such removal of the central bank governor would have been reported by mainstream media. However, a search using relevant keywords revealed no such coverage or confirmation from any credible news outlet or authoritative source. Moreover, a review of the official website of Bangladesh Bank shows that Ahsan H. Mansur is still serving as the current governor.

Additionally, although the claim began circulating on June 11, Ahsan H. Mansur traveled to London on an official visit as Governor of Bangladesh Bank between June 10 and June 13. This was confirmed in a press release issued by Bangladesh Bank to the media on June 14.

Therefore, the claim that Ahsan H. Mansur was dismissed or removed from his position as Governor of Bangladesh Bank for including an image of a temple on the 20 Taka note is false.
