A video circulating on Facebook claims that the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff has made comments about a former Prime Minister. The video was posted on July 2 from a Facebook account named “Md. Masud Rana.” The caption of the post reads, “A new message from the new Army Chief to Hasu Apa, who delivers dialogues while sitting on Modi’s lap.”

Fact-check

Boom Bangladesh has verified that the claim is false. The video does not depict a real event or actual comments. Instead, an AI-generated video has been shared as though it were real. Keyframes from the video were extracted and subjected to reverse image search, but no credible source or information was found to support the video's authenticity. Moreover, no new appointment has recently been made for the position of Army Chief. According to a press release issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate on June 11 last year, Lieutenant General Waker-uz-Zaman was appointed as Chief of Army Staff for a three-year term starting from June 23, 2024.

Further analysis of the video revealed discrepancies such as a microphone from a non-existent media outlet and inconsistencies in the color and design of the military uniform shown—anomalies commonly observed in AI-generated visuals. Additionally, the lower right corner of the video displays the 'Veo' watermark. Veo is a realistic video generation tool developed by Google DeepMind, capable of generating videos from text and images and producing native audio in its latest version, Veo-3.

Google's generative tool also incorporates a watermarking system known as ‘SynthID’ in its content, which is invisible to the naked eye but detectable using Google’s SynthID detection tool. Verification using this method identified the video as having been created using Google’s AI tools.

In conclusion, the video is AI-generated. Therefore, an artificially created video is being disseminated on social media as though it captures a real event, which is misleading.
