The claim that the Advisor for Home Affairs of the interim government, Lieutenant Colonel (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, stated that "robbers and snatchers should be shot on sight" has been found to be false. A fabricated photocard bearing the logo of mainstream media outlet Kaler Kantho was circulated on social media, falsely attributing this statement to him. The claim emerged following a press conference held by the Home Affairs Advisor at 3 AM on February 23, in light of the deteriorating law and order situation in the country, including incidents of robbery, snatching, and sexual violence.
Upon investigation by the Rumor Scanner team, it was confirmed that the Home Affairs Advisor did not make any such remarks, nor did Kaler Kantho publish any news or photocards with such a statement. The viral photocard was, in fact, a forged version made to resemble an official Kaler Kantho publication. A closer examination of the image revealed that it contained Kaler Kantho's logo and mentioned a publication date of February 24, 2025.
Further scrutiny of Kaler Kantho's official Facebook page and YouTube channel found no evidence of the claimed photocard or any related information. Additionally, the font used in the fabricated photocard differed from the fonts typically used in Kaler Kantho's official graphics. The visual elements of the fake photocard were clearly manipulated to imitate Kaler Kantho's design.
On February 25, Kaler Kantho officially debunked the claim through its verified Facebook page, where it posted a clarification stating that the viral photocard was not created or published by them.
A review of Kaler Kantho's website on February 24 uncovered a news report titled “Joint Forces Patrolling Across Dhaka and the Country from Evening.” According to this report, the Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, had announced that combined patrols by joint forces would be conducted in key areas across the country, including the capital, from the evening of February 24. He shared this information with journalists following a core committee meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs that afternoon. However, the report contained no mention of any directive to shoot robbers or snatchers on sight.
Thus, the viral photocard circulating under Kaler Kantho’s name with the headline “Joint Forces Patrolling Across Dhaka and the Country from Evening, Robbers and Snatchers to Be Shot on Sight” is entirely false and fabricated.
