A viral post on Facebook has circulated an image of an official letter alongside a photograph of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, alleging that he has resigned and fled the country. Multiple such posts have surfaced on social media. On January 24, an account named "Md Polash" posted the image, stating, "Breaking News: The illegitimate advisor Yunus has resigned and fled the country."
Fact-checking by Boom Bangladesh has revealed that the letter claiming Dr. Yunus's resignation is edited. No credible evidence has been found to substantiate claims of his resignation. A similar letter, with identical wording, was previously discovered on Facebook on September 16 of last year. The only changes in the newly circulated letter are the official seal and date.
Moreover, the word "poroborti" (meaning "subsequent") is misspelled in the document, indicating inconsistencies. This suggests that the alleged resignation letter is merely a doctored version of the fake letter from last September, with alterations to the logo and date. Furthermore, while the letter is dated January 22, no national or international media outlet has reported any news of Dr. Yunus’s resignation even two days later. Typically, if a head of government resigns, it would receive significant coverage from both domestic and global media. Additionally, the official website of the Cabinet Division still lists Dr. Yunus as the Chief Advisor.
A keyword search of recent media reports confirms that Dr. Yunus is currently in Davos, Switzerland, attending the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting. A previous report by the online news portal Dhaka Post on January 14 indicated that his participation in the forum marked his first overseas trip of the new year. A Kaler Kantho report published on January 20 stated that he departed from Dhaka on that date for Switzerland and was scheduled to return to Bangladesh on January 24 after attending the conference.
Thus, the claim of Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s resignation is entirely unfounded. The dissemination of an edited letter to falsely assert his resignation is misleading and deceptive.
