A video has recently been circulated online claiming that the Indian Army Chief stated, "If Sheikh Hasina returns to Bangladesh, Dhaka-Delhi relations will be as before."
Fact-check
An investigation by the Rumor Scanner team revealed that the Indian Army Chief did not make such a statement. Instead, a comment regarding potential changes in Dhaka-Delhi relations if the government in Bangladesh changes was misrepresented to support the misleading claim.
A review of the video in question found no mention of the statement, "If Sheikh Hasina returns to Bangladesh, Dhaka-Delhi relations will be as before." Additionally, the video featured the logo of the national daily Samakal. A subsequent search of Samakal’s official Facebook page led to a post published on March 10, which contained a video matching the circulated footage. The caption of the post stated, “If the government in Bangladesh changes, Dhaka-Delhi relations may change: Indian Army Chief.”
Further investigation found a report published on March 9 on the website of the online news portal Dhaka Post, titled “If the government in Bangladesh changes, relations with India may change.” According to this report, Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi remarked that a change in the Bangladeshi government could lead to shifts in its relations with India. He also emphasized that military ties between Bangladesh and India remain strong, with both countries' armed forces regularly exchanging notes.
Thus, media reports confirm that the Indian Army Chief did not state that Dhaka-Delhi relations would remain unchanged if Sheikh Hasina returns to Bangladesh. Rather, his comment on bilateral relations in the context of a potential government change in Bangladesh has been misleadingly propagated to suggest otherwise. This claim is, therefore, misleading.
